A native of Mississippi and a graduate of the Memphis College of Art, Randy Hayes is a past recipient of the Visual Arts Award  given by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters

Randy Hayes has received awards through the auspices of the Seattle and Tacoma Art Museums and the Flintridge Foundation in Pasadena. His work is included in many public and private collections including the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the U.S. Department of State. He has exhibited his work at numerous museums including the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

in 2009 his Ruins series was exhibited at the University Museum in Oxford, Mississippi. Ruins of Mississippi and Other Places compared the ruins of the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina with ruins the artist had seen in Japan, Mexico, Turkey and India. Some of that work was also exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.

in 2011 the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson exhibited Kyoto Views a selection of the artist's paintings about Kyoto, Japan. Unfamiliar Territory, a fifteen year survey of the artist's work, was exhibited at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Willamette University, in Salem, Oregon in 2012.

Unwritten Memoir, a thirteen year survey of thirty paintings and an installation, was exhibited at the University of Mississippi Museum in 2017.
